Forging a Greener Future: Decarbonising Kolhapur’s Foundries

Kolhapur stands as one of India’s most dynamic foundry clusters — a hub of industrial skill, innovation, and resilience. But as global industries transition towards a low-carbon economy, a critical question emerges: how can we sustain industrial growth while reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency?

The Kolhapur Foundry Decarbonisation Project, led by Asar in collaboration with local industries, technical experts, and the Decarbonisation India Alliance, is pioneering practical pathways to make foundries more energy-efficient, competitive, and climate-ready.

Project Focus Areas:

  • Conducting energy audits and renewable energy assessments
  • Building capacity for carbon accounting and CBAM readiness
  • Demonstrating actionable models for emission reduction and efficiency improvement

This initiative brings together industry, government, academia, and communities to co-create a roadmap for sustainable industrial growth — one that balances productivity with environmental responsibility.

The insights from this project are already informing future decarbonisation efforts in other industrial clusters such as Sangli and Belagavi, setting a precedent for cleaner, more resilient industrial ecosystems across India.
