Job Summary: The Head of Communications (Hindi) will lead the development and execution of strategic communication initiatives, with a primary focus on Hindi-language outreach and engagement across key regions, including Jharkhand and Bihar The role will aim to strengthen visibility, engagement, and narrative influence within the states, as well as design strategies to amplify Asar and its partners’ work  to national and global audiences. Working closely with the Jharkhand and Bihar teams, this position will serve as a strategic anchor to connect locally grounded communications with wider platforms and networks.

This role will be responsible for designing and implementing tailored strategies to effectively reach and engage Hindi-speaking audiences. Key responsibilities include building and strengthening media and communications networks, driving communication-led initiatives that support programme development, and planning and delivering communications training and workshops for local teams, partner organisations and other stakeholders. The role will also collaborate closely with Asar’s digital communications teams to ensure regional stories are effectively surfaced and adapted for broader dissemination.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong vision for shaping and scaling narratives on climate impacts and locally led climate action emerging from Jharkhand and Bihar and other Hindi states. They will play a critical role in building a robust subnational communications ecosystem—one that enhances state-level visibility and engagement while enabling strategic amplification at national and global levels, in alignment with programmatic goals. Experience in engaging digital and social mediums would be an advantage. 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategy Planning and Execution
    • Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive, Hindi-first communications strategy, anchoring audience engagement in Hindi while shaping a cohesive narrative that resonates across Hindi-speaking regions.
    • Drive strategic communications for Jharkhand and Bihar, ensuring alignment with state team priorities while contributing to a broader, cross-state Hindi narrative.
    • Design and lead a Hindi-first digital media strategy, working closely with digital and editorial teams to co-create high-impact, audience-centric content across channels.
    • Oversee the planning and delivery of integrated communications for programme initiatives, ensuring consistency with the overall Hindi communications approach.
    • Partner proactively with programme verticals and state teams to identify synergies, shape joint narratives, and amplify cross-functional initiatives across regions.

2. Engagements and Systems Thinking

  • Actively participate in meetings organised by state teams and partner networks to build systems-level thinking on communications and strategically elevate the profile of work in the state.
  • Proactively identify and engage external stakeholders—including media, digital content creators, and storytellers—to build bespoke collaborations, with the aim of developing a “communications mycelium.”
  • Support grassroots partners in assessing and strengthening their communications capacity by designing trainings, workshops, tools, and resources. Collaborate with the communications team to co-design such training modules, tailored to the needs of state partners.
  1. Team Supervision and Mentoring
    • Lead, mentor, and develop junior team members, ensuring strong execution and high-quality outputs.
    • Oversee workflows, prioritisation, and coordination to ensure timely and effective delivery of work.
    • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and innovative team environment.
    • Assess team capacity and enable performance by providing necessary support, tools, and external resources, including vendor partnerships where required.  
    • Monitor and analyse comms outputs regularly, to optimise workflows and drive consistently high-quality delivery.
    • Oversee state communications budgets, bringing strategic oversight to campaign planning and budget approvals. Review vendor proposals and ensure cost-effective, high-impact utilisation of resources.
  1. Communications Generalist
    • Support Asar’s communications efforts across core initiatives, providing strategic inputs while bringing a strong national and regional audience lens to all communications work.
    • Contribute to editorial processes as needed—offering inputs, shaping narratives, and ensuring high-quality delivery of communication assets.
    • Collaborate closely with the broader communications team, proactively sharing workload and demonstrating a hands-on, solutions-oriented approach, especially during high-pressure periods.  

Qualifications:

  • Master’s/Bachelor’s degree in Communications, journalism or a related field.
  • More than 10 years of experience in communication, narrative building, journalism or   related roles.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Hindi and English language proficiency, with good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in basic AI and other design tools (Canva, etc) will be an asset. 
  • Creative thinker with the ability to develop innovative communications strategies.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Willingness to travel regularly.
